What To Do On Christchurch Holidays
Who doesn’t love planning a trip away? There’s nothing more exciting than booking flights for Christchurch holidays or some other incredibly thrilling destination and then spending hours deciding what you’re going to get up to while away. If you are about to fly to Christchurch, here are just a couple of ideas you might want to include on your itinerary.
The TranzAlpine train
If you want to see the countryside, you absolutely have to book yourself a ticket for the world-famous TranzAlpine train that runs daily from Christchurch to Greymouth. You’ll make your way through the farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, get some incredible views over some of the deepest gorges to be found anywhere, go past the ice-fed Waimakariri River and lots, lots more. Keep your eyes peeled for the incredible Punakaiki pancake rocks, as well.
The Christchurch gondola
Another incredible way of seeing Christchurch is by soaring suspended above beautiful valleys in the gondola cable car, one of the most popular tourist attractions around. There are also lots of walking trails and mountain bike tracks around here to keep you busy.
Orana Wildlife Park
This year, the zoo is celebrating 40 years of being in operation so it’s a great time to go and visit. It’s just 15 short minutes’ drive away from the airport, so you could be feeding giraffes in next to no time! Must-do activities include meeting white rhinos, lion encounters and even getting to see some of the most endangered native wildlife, like the kea (a mountain-only parrot). You should also make time to see the Tasmanian devils and kids will really love spending time in the Farmyard.
There are so many farmers’ markets in and around Christchurch that you really are spoiled for choice! Our favourites are the Waipara Valley Farmers’ Market, put on in Amberley every Saturday, as well as the Ohoka market on a Friday morning until 12:30. Riccarton Market is the biggest market of its kind to be found in Christchurch and is on every Sunday from 09:00 until 14:00 – and it’s a great place to go if you’re after a holiday bargain and some souvenirs to take home.
Here, you’ll find incredible Maori exhibits, as well as a Christchurch Victorian street, lots of interactive learning opportunities for children and a truly fascinating Antarctic exhibition. You couldn’t ask for more!
